ADULT REMEDIAL DRIVING COURSE

Adult Remedial Driving Course is a State-approved 8-hour defensive driving program available online or in a classroom. A driver can take a course for many reasons, including:

  • 2-Point Credit – If you have 2–11 points on your record, completing this course removes 2 points. This matters because the Ohio BMV suspends licenses at 12 points; with the credit, suspension won’t occur until you accumulate 14 points on your license. The credit lasts for 2 years, and you can use it for this purpose up to 5 times in your lifetime.
  • 12-Point Suspension – If your license has already been suspended for reaching 12 points, completing this course is one of the requirements for driving license reinstatement.
  • Court-Ordered  – If a court requires you to take this course, you won’t receive any point credit, but you must submit your passing certificate to the court.
  • OVI/OVUAC Suspension – If your license was suspended for driving under the influence of alcohol while under age 21, this course is required.
  • Juvenile Suspension – If you received a suspension before age 18, this course is required.

ABBREVIATED ADULT DRIVER TRAINING

The Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course is for adults (18+) who have never held a driver’s license and failed their maneuverability or road test at the BMV, and are required to take this course before retaking either test.

If you’re required to complete this course, you must fulfill one of the following requirements:

  • Complete a 4-hour state-approved online course from an Ohio BMV-approved training school, followed by 4 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor.
  • Complete a 4-hour state-approved online course from an Ohio BMV-approved training school, followed by 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver. If you choose this option, you must complete a 24-hour affidavit, and you cannot drive more than 4 hours per day.
  • Complete a 4-hour in-person class from an Ohio BMV-approved driving school, followed by 4 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor.
  • Complete a 4-hour in-person class from an Ohio BMV-approved driving school, followed by 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver. If you choose this option, you must complete a 24-hour affidavit, and you cannot drive more than 4 hours per day.

CLASS-D DRIVER TRAINING (24-HOUR TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION)

Starting from September 30, 2025, Ohio residents aged 18, 19, and 20 are required to complete the State-approved “Class D” or “Teen Class” course along with 50 hours of driving practice to receive a driver’s license.

If you’re under 21 and want to apply for a driver’s license, you need to complete Class D driver training from an Ohio BMV-approved traffic school, either in person or online.

The Class D course has two parts:

  • 24 hours of in-person or online education covering traffic laws, road safety, and signs.
8 hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction with a licensed instructor.
  • If you’re a temporary resident of Ohio, the BMV requires you to complete this course along with 50 hours of driving practice with a licensed instructor before scheduling a driving test.

If you’ve completed this course, including the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training, you are exempt from taking the Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course, which is otherwise required if you fail your maneuverability or road test.
